Resilient urban planning
Climate planning
Lanzarote faces the challenge of rethinking its urban and rural spaces from the perspective of resilience and climate change adaptation.
The current model, shaped by decades of tourism growth and territorial sprawl, calls for a new outlook: greener, more integrated and better prepared against extreme climate events.
This area proposes turning the island into a European benchmark for climate urban planning , where nature and city evolve in balance.

The Challenge
Urban nature
Improving urban environments to enhance quality of life.
Climate resilience
Strengthening urban green infrastructure to reduce environmental vulnerability.
Post-Carbon Mobility
Developing a strategic island mobility plan.
Comprehensive planning
Climate criteria urgently need to be integrated into urban planning to strengthen island resilience.
Planning the territory from the climate and designing with nature to make the landscape an active infrastructure that protects, connects and regenerates
Lines of
action
Climate Plan 2030 - 2040
A roadmap for the climate.
Define an island-wide strategy that incorporates mitigation, adaptation and resilience to climate change, aligned with European objectives and the 2030 Agenda.
Climate Urban Planning Office
A technical space to coordinate the transition.
Create an office that brings together the Cabildo and municipalities to apply climate criteria, manage environmental data and design resilient planning tools.
Green infrastructure
The landscape as living infrastructure.
Recover native vegetation, restore soils and connect natural and urban spaces to improve biodiversity, thermal comfort and water management.
Sustainable water management
Design cities to manage rainfall.
Apply sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) that reduce flooding and use water as an ecological resource.
Post-carbon mobility
Move with zero emissions, connect without barriers.
Promote active, low-carbon mobility: clean public transport, pedestrian and cycling networks, and a progressive reduction of motorised traffic in urban areas, cutting emissions and improving air quality.
Relevant
studies
Initiatives that test on the ground an urban planning adapted to Lanzarote's climate and landscape.
A new way of conceiving the territory.
